On Saturday, the stadium was full. A combined 30,610 fans from both Temple and Maryland were at Lincoln Financial Field to see the game, and no one in the stands could have anticipated the outcome. By Saturday evening, Temple was #2 trending on Twitter, with over 42.8K tweets. In a stellar game, the Temple Owls dominated the field against the ranked Maryland Terrapins and won their second game of the season, with a final score of 20-17. With an unstoppable defense along with great plays from offense, here are the highlights from this week’s victory at home for the Owls!
While Saturday’s game was defensively dominated, there were some great plays from the offense that made it possible for the Owls to secure the victory over the Terrapins. QB Anthony Russo completed 20 out of 37 pass attempts for 277 yards, had 3 TD and 1 INT. In the 1st quarter, Russo connected with WR Isaiah Wright for a 29-yard touchdown, giving the Owls a 7-0 lead. By the 3rd quarter, Russo shined and connected with WR Jadan Blue for a beautiful 79-yard touchdown, giving the Owls the lead again, 13-9.
In the 4th quarter, Russo connected with TE Kenny Yeboah in the end zone for a touchdown, once again giving the Owls the lead over the Terrapins with a 20-15 score.
Overall, the offense had some good plays, but have some mistakes to clean up prior to next week’s game. The Owls had 3 turnovers, which easily could have handed the win to Maryland if it weren’t for the tough defense.
When it comes to the Temple defense in Saturday’s game, nothing short of magic happened. The Terrapins made it to the red zone multiple times, but were unable to break through Temple’s tough defense. Key players include Linebacker Shaun Bradley, who had a total of 8 tackles, 3 of those for loss of yards. Bradley had a huge tackle to stop Maryland from scoring on 4th and goal in the 4th quarter, a crucial point in the game that could have given them the lead.
Other great defensive players include Cornerback Harrison Hand, who dominated with 10 tackles and 1 INT, and Defensive Tackle Ifeanyi Maijeh who had 6 tackles, 3 for loss of yards, and 2 sacks.
The defense swarmed to the ball and was able to hold Maryland to 13 points offensively with 4 of their 17 points coming from safeties. The Owls were able to hold a team that scored 79 points in their first game at Howard and 63 points in a blowout over then No. 21 ranked Syracuse the week prior to a mere 17 points. Simply phenomenal!
By the 4th quarter, the Owls defense made two huge stops in the final 5 minutes, preventing Maryland from scoring and securing the win.
The win against Maryland meant a lot to the Owls and Coach Carey, who just became the second Owl coach to defeat a nationally-ranked team in his first season. He joins Bobby Wallace, who defeated #14 Virginia Tech, 28-24, on Oct. 17, 1998.
Temple will surely keep up this same momentum in next week’s game. Hopefully Temple with be trending on Twitter again as well. The Owls travel to Buffalo on September 21st to play the Buffalo Bulls. Catch the game at 3:30pm on ESPNU. Go Owls!
