Temple Faces Crushing Loss in 2019 Military Bowl
Temple fans everywhere were anticipating a difficult, but winnable bowl game against the North Carolina Tar Heels. The result, was much worse than anyone was expecting. Amongst some 24, 242 fans in Annapolis, the Temple Owls faced a devastating loss against the Tar Heels, with a final score of 55-13. The Owls finished the season with an 8-5 record for a second year in a row, the first winning season at Temple for head coach Rod Carey. Though Temple has a winning season, there are definitely some improvements to be made on the team as a whole. Let’s look at the numbers for Friday’s Military Bowl Game.
You could say that both the Temple offense and defense struggled. QB Anthony Russo went 12 out of 20 completions for 128 yards and 1 INT. Backup QB Todd Centeio made half of his completions, 6/12, for 66 yards, 1 TD and 1 INT. The Temple offense unfortunately couldn’t come close to the Tar Heel offense, who had a total of 296 yards. Running Back Re’Mahn Davis had 15 carries for 36 yards, while wide receiver Jadan Blue had 8 receptions for 92 yards. On Friday, Blue became the first receiver in program history to break 1,000 yards receiving in a single season.
Temple’s defense really struggled, allowing 296 offensive yards from the Tar Heels. Some key players from the defense include safety Benny Walls, who had 12 total tackles and 3 solo, and linebacker Chapelle Russell who had 9 total tackles, 6 solo, and 1 for loss.
Let’s face it, there’s nothing to really brag about when it comes to the Owl’s performance in the Military Bowl. The performance from the team as a whole didn’t reflect the effort, passion, and perseverance displayed throughout the entire season. Now with college football coming to an end, the Owls now have an opportunity to focus on implementing important change, correcting mistakes, and coming back next season better than the last.
I’ll always be rooting for you, Owls. Until next season!
