The eclectic musical sounds of Philadelphia can now all be found on one playlist, courtesy of the streaming titan Spotify. A new campaign from the company hopes to pay respect to the rich musical history of the city by featuring a variety of Philadelphia musicians, both old and new, on a new playlist titled ‘Philly Knows Music’.
‘Philly Knows Music’ is wide-ranging as a playlist, as it includes music from very disparate genres. There are a notable amount of hip-hop selections, such as Meek Mill, The Roots, Tierra Whack, and Lil Dicky just to name a few. An alternative spirit also shines through with artists such as The War on Drugs, Dr. Dog, Alex G, and Hop Along.
Of course, the emo crowd isn’t to be forgotten either. Songs from Modern Baseball, mewithoutYou, and Cayetana can be found spliced between music of a very different nature. The playlist’s depth is impressive and even includes Duke Ellington/John Coltrane’s “In A Sentimental Mood, originally composed in 1935.
In addition to ‘Philly Knows Music’, there is a second city-themed playlist. This one is titled ‘Philly’s Top Hits’ and is depicted as the freshest hits and most played tracks in the city right now. This playlist appears to be just another compilation of what’s most relevant in popular music right now (AKA Ariana Grande and trap-rap).
Spotify has chosen to partner with Philadelphia’s DJ Jazzy Jeff for this initiative, which also includes a free 2 month package of Spotify Premium for users who have yet to try the premium service.
