The shortest day of the year, also known as the winter solstice, will soon be upon us. The winter solstice has a storied history, having been observed as a special moment in various cultures dating all the way back to neolithic times. Ancient tradition has it that this marks the day that the moon gave birth to the sun. While a lot has changed since that time, seasonal changes still matter in the present day. Why not celebrate a seasonal festival? The city of Philadelphia has many opportunities for you to participate in this winter solstice celebration. Check out a few of them below.
Pacific Yoga’s Winter Solstice Celebration
Pacific Yoga urges you to properly orient yourself with your future goals through yoga practice during the winter solstice. In addition to the yoga, there will also be live harp playing, seasonal acupuncture realignment, and communal tea. This event takes place Saturday, December 21st from 3 to 5 pm. RSVP here.
New Thought Philadelphia’s Winter Solstice Celebration
This winter solstice celebration chooses to focus on the power of light during the darkest day of the year. After all, days will gradually stretch longer and longer moving forward. Features of this event include inspiration music & rhythm, storytelling, candlelighting, and meditation with live hang music. This celebration will take place on Saturday, December 21st at 5 pm. There is no cost for this experience.
Philadelphia Ethical Society
The Philadelphia Ethical Society will host it’s celebration right in Rittenhouse Square. They hope for a 2020 full of light and will encourage that future with abundant words of wisdom, music, and candles. This event will take place on Sunday December 15th, from 11 am to 12:30 pm.
