The newest season of American Idol started this month. The popular competition series has been around since 2002, and has made some of the music industry’s most popular stars, ranging from Kelly Clarkson to Carrie Underwood. The beginning of the series always starts with plenty of auditions, narrowing down several different candidates to see who has what it takes to be the next big music star – and one happened to be from our area!
Singer Louis Knight moved to the Philadelphia area, specifically Lower Merion, all the way from London eight years ago. He explained on camera how adjusting to life in America was difficult, but made easier by finding a friend in a boy named Russell. Unfortunately, Russell struggled with his own problems and committed suicide, which served as inspiration for Louis to write the song he performed for judges, called “Change.”
With his passionate vocals, his heartfelt lyrics, and impressive piano playing, Louis absolutely wowed the judges. Judge Luke Bryan said that Louis “might be the biggest star we’ve ever had on American Idol.” Other judges Katy Perry and Lionel Richie admired his lyrics and the sentiment behind the song. Ultimately, Louis got an unanimous “yes” from the judges and an official golden ticket to advance to Hollywood!
We’ll be rooting for you from home!
