Just when we couldn’t love our sports teams anymore, another player makes us smile. Former Phillies second baseman and All-Star Chase Utley surprised a doctor who is a big fan.
Dr. Mark Mikkelsen, Chief of The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania’s Critical Care Section and head of the COVID-19 unit, appeared as a guest on MLB Network’s “Intentional Talk,” with hosts Chris Rose and Kevin Millar.
On Monday’s show, he discussed his experiences in the hospital and just like baseball, it is a team effort. Dr. Mikkelsen is a huge baseball fan and an even bigger fan of Utley. He loved how he has come back to the city and celebrated being back in Citizens Bank Park.
After the doctor talked for a bit, Utley made a surprise Skype appearance. They both praised each other and thanked each other for being huge parts of this city.
Dr. Mikkelsen coaches all of his sons in baseball and told Utley they were confused about what team to root for when he was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers. He retired from the sport in 2018.
The doctor “with passion and compassion” remains positive as he continues to treat those affected by the virus and remains positive that baseball will be back soon.
Thank you so much to Chase Utley, Dr. Mikkelsen, and all the healthcare workers working tirelessly to treat those who are sick.
