For years, Philadelphia’s nickname has been “The City of Brotherly Love.” During 2020, that is changing. It will now be called “The City of Sisterly Love.”
The morning of January 30th, City Council unanimously voted to change the nickname. Councilmember Katherine Gilmore Richardson said it is for the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment, which allowed women and everyone else who wasn’t a white male, to vote.
It is a marketing campaign to encourage women to travel together and spend more money, in a joint effort with Visit Philadelphia.
The nickname will only last until the end of the year, so take advantage of it. We love women’s rights and empowerment!
