PA Stores Designating Shopping Time for Seniors During Corona Virus Outbreak

The Corona virus outbreak has taken over all aspects of our society, from our leisurely entertainment to even basic trips like going to the grocery store. Within the past week, the CDC has strongly recommended people practice “social distancing” to limit human contact as much as possible. The Pennsylvania government has also taken their own precautionary measures by closing schools, temporarily shutting down restaurants, movie theaters, and even church gatherings.
Because the elderly have a higher risk of being critically affected by the virus, many have opted to stay home amid the recent influx of shoppers rushing to stores to stock up for necessities. In response to the virus outbreak and out of compassion for this large age group, specific stores like ACME Markets and Giant have designated specific store hours for seniors to shop.
Albertsons Companies, which owns Acme Markets, are setting aside specific shopping hours for senior citizens and other at-risk populations, like pregnant women or individuals who are immunocompromised. According to the Albertsons website, Acme will designate every Tuesday and Thursday from 7am-9am for the vulnerable customers to shop for groceries.
Starting Thursday, March 19th, Giant stores are dedicating the first hour of each day, from 6am-7am, to customers age 60 and older to shop. These specialized hours are meant to help the elderly avoid crowded shopping and practice better social distancing.
Through these tough and chaotic times, it is truly great to see companies, like our favorite food stores, come together to help those who can be most affected by this virus.
