Geno’s Steaks Introduces Whizzy the Cheesesteak Mascot
When you think about the cheesesteak scene in Philly, there are a few historic landmarks of sorts that come to mind. At the intersection of 9th street and Passyunk Avenue in South Philadelphia lies a cheesesteak rivalry that dates back decades: Pat’s King of Steaks and Geno’s Steaks. Considered a popular joint to visit to both Philly locals and tourists, Geno’s Steaks is known for its classic cheesesteaks and hoagies. Recently, the restaurant introduced a new mascot named “Whizzy” (an homage to the iconic cheese whiz on a cheesesteak) to liven up the Geno’s brand!
As seen pictured, Whizzy is a life sized cheesesteak mascot, with little details like onions and whiz oozing out of his sides. According to restaurant owner, Geno Vento, Whizzy’s purpose is to make people smile throughout the city. In a press release, Vento stated that Whizzy was created, “to embody kindness, positivity and community.” This isn’t the lovable mascots only purpose, however. Through the spike in popularity from Whizzy’s release, Geno’s has been giving out free cheesesteaks and plans to present a $1,500 check to Easterseals, a nonprofit that helps children and adults with disabilities and Citizens for Fire Prevention Committee, which serve the Philly Fire Department.
Thanks to Geno’s for all the great things it does for our city! What do you think of Whizzy?
