Halloween Events in Philadelphia: Rest In Peace 5K Run – October 5 2019
Most people wouldn’t dare run through a cemetery at all, not even on Halloween. Maybe because none of us want to look salty like Linus from Charlie Brown awaiting the arrival of the Great Pumpkin. However, if you’ve ever wanted to throw on a costume that matches your favorite running shoes then the upcoming Rest In Peace 5K Run has your name written all over it.
The event benefits the historic landmark Laurel Hill Cemetery in East Falls. It’s a fun way to show off your Halloween pride and also be a part of a great cause. The run was created to ensure the maintenance of both Laurel Hill and West Laurel Hill Cemeteries as well as to support their educational programs and public outreach. And don’t let the fact that this event takes place inside of a cemetery deter you from participating because this event has been going strong for eleven years and attracts all kinds of folks.
There’s even an after party directly following the run where prizes are given to, not only the winners, but also to the person with the best costume. There will also be raffles, music and free beer during the after party. And in the event you can’t make the 5K you can support the cause by attending the annual Gravediggers Ball at the Mutter Museum, October 18 at 7pm. It’s all of the costumed fun of the 5K without any of the running or profuse sweating. Information about both the 5K and Gravediggers ball can be found here.
Terror Behind the Walls at Eastern State Penitentiary
Ironically, one of the sponsors for the Laurel Hill 5K is the iconic yet ominous Philly attraction in Fairmount, Eastern State Penitentiary. Every year many Philadelphians, and out of towners, flock to their massive haunted house called Terror Behind the Walls. It has become a tradition for all those who like to be scared half to death just for fun. Though if you’re thinking it’s just a bunch of people dressed in intricately grotesque costumes screaming at you to get a reaction there’s far more that goes into the process than just terror. The people who work there are highly trained before interacting with the public. Former TBTW employee and West Oak Lane resident Eric Lawson revealed that the build up to the actual opening of the show is filled with lots of training to ensure everyone, including the actors, have a good, safe time.
“I worked at Terror Behind the Walls for 10 years.” He says. “The best part for me was obviously meeting new people but the most important part I take away from this is the professionalism and personal development.”
If anyone has ever attended TBTW then they know there’s a lot going on in various sections of the penitentiary. And though the actors make it look easy there’s a lot of hard work that goes into it.
“People only see what’s on the outside but we would sit through hours and hours of various customer service training with different professionals, even lawyers. Training sessions included media training, sensitivity training, customer relations..it goes on and on.”
If you’ve never been now is the perfect time to grab a few friends and check out one of the most iconic Halloween events in Philadelphia. Tickets for Terror Behind the Walls are on sale now and can be purchased through their official website.
