Things Only Northeast Residents Can Relate To
Philadelphia is a huge city, so much so that it is separated into sections – North, Northwest, Northeast, South, and West Philly.
Today, we are focusing on the Northeast section of the city. Northeast Philly, or the Great Northeast, hosts most of the city’s population, with 300,000 to 450,000 people. The city is so big that it is separated into two sections, the Near or Lower and the Far Northeast.
The Northeast is very unique, almost like a whole new city entirely.
Here are things only Northeast Residents can relate to.
Roosevelt Blvd. is a major road that goes throughout the Northeast. But if you are from the Northeast you most likely refer to it as “The Boulevard.” There are more boulevards throughout the city, but The Boulevard is known throughout the city and everyone knows what you are talking about. It is also one of the most dangerous roads in the city.
Nifty Fifty’s is the local hangout spot
Nifty Fifty’s is a restaurant right off the Boulevard that serves the best burgers, fries, and milkshakes. A new Nifty’s was just built in South Philadelphia. Many kids from the Northeast hang out at Nifty’s with their friends. It is THE spot to hang out, day or night. There are only two other locations, Folsom, PA, and Turnersville, NJ, after the Bensalem, PA, location burned down a few years ago.
Rest in peace Nabisco! Remember driving down the Boulevard, or even just standing outside your house, and smelling the delicious food, coming out of the factory. However, the factory is not there anymore. There are plans for more restaurants to go in where the factory was, including a TopGolf, a Chipotle, and more.
You are an OG if you know what Franklin Mills is. Now called Philadelphia Mills Mall, Franklin Mills was the mall that everyone grew up with. It was the local hangout spot on the weekends with your friends, whether you just met up or actually shopped. Does anyone else remember the big Benjamin Franklin head in the middle of the mall? That was scary.
Bustleton vs Somerton
There are many neighborhoods in the Northeast, but nothing quite compares to the “rivalry” between Bustleton and Somerton. The two biggest neighborhoods, Bustleton and Somerton is where many of the schools are located and where teens would hang out in the park and playgrounds.
Judge vs Ryan
Like Bustleton and Somerton, Judge vs. Ryan is one of the biggest rivalries in the Northeast. For those of you who are unfamiliar, Father Judge High School and Archbishop Ryan High School have a huge rivalry, especially when it comes to their sports team. They are two of the biggest high schools populated by kids from the Northeast and it is fun to tease the other high school, as long as it stays a fun rivalry.
Of course there is Philadelphia International Airport, but did you know there is also a tiny airport right off of Grant Avenue and Ashton Road. You can’t book a trip to Disney World or Italy through them, but small planes and helicopters take off and land there. Sometimes, when an important figure comes to town, they land there instead of the big airport.
