The Phillie Phanatic Has a New Look
It was announced on Friday that the fan-favorite Phillie Phanatic will debut his new look on the 24th. During the 1:05pm spring training game in Clearwater, FL, the Phanatic showed off his new look.
Fans were not too happy with the news, but the new look shouldn’t cause too much drama.
Although not drastic, there are some changes to the lovable furry creature.
He has sprouted wings, a bushier and blue tail, bushier eyebrows, different color socks, and a bigger backside. His flightless wings are inspired by the extremities of the flightless Galapagos penguins, which is where the Phanatic is from.
Blue pays homage to the old Phillies colors. His shoes feature a Liberty Bell and pay tribute to the major Philly landmark.
The Phillies are currently in a legal battle with the original designers, Bonnie Erikson and Wayde Harrison. The team bought the rights to the Phanatic in 1984, but artists are allowed to renegotiate rights after 35 years, according to federal law.
They hope that this change will allow the team to continue to use the Phillie Phanatic as their mascot.
What do you think of the changes?
