The Best of Philly’s Music Scene: 2019 Edition
Breakout Artist: Tierra Whack
Although Tierra Whack’s debut album was released in May 2018, she continued her ascension in the realm of hip hop in 2019. Starting in February of this past year she released five singles in as many weeks as part of a series she dubbed #whackhistorymonth. Later in the year, she was featured on Flying Lotus’s recrod “Flamagra” and contributed as a memorable addition to the song “Yellow Belly”. Additionally, the summer of 2019 saw Whack named as one of the members of XXL’s freshman class.
Notable Album Release: Distant Call by Sheer Mag
While there weren’t too many Philadelphia-based artists releasing albums this year, Sheer Mag’s “Distant Call” stands out as a consistently solid rock project. The band built off the success of their breakout album and continued to deliver unabashedly honest lyricism combined with loud punk-rock riffs. Check out a full review of the album here.
Best Live Concert: Tame Impala
On Friday, August 23rd psychedelic rock group Tame Impala took the Mann Center for Performing Arts by storm and delivered a kaleidoscopic show complete with canon-launched confetti, strobe lights, and jams. The band played fan favorites from their last three albums in addition to new songs such as “Borderlines” and “Patience”. The energetic live performance is all the more impressive when you consider that the songs that frontman Kevin Parker writer are at heart introspective. Yet they have to power to capture the hearts and minds of so many devoted fans who came together and joined in this communal experience. Check out a full review of the concert here.
