Gritty Surprises Special Boy with Birthday Party
It all started when 4 year-old Jack Callahan of Charlottesville, VA wrote Gritty a letter last month. Jack was 3 years old at the time, and wrote to Gritty, talking about how much he loved the Flyers mascot, how he wanted to dress up as him for Halloween, and of course asked him a few important questions like, “Where are you from?”, and “What do you like to eat?”.
When the Flyers and Gritty saw this letter and heard that Jack is currently battling a rare form of cancer at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (and that his birthday was on October 30th), the Flyers mascot stopped by the Ronald McDonald house to throw him a very special birthday party. Jack had cake, an awesome Gritty costume, and even got to play a fun game called “Pin the googly eyes on Gritty.”
Jack had the time of his life, according to his uncle, Ryan Callahan, who said, “Jack was over the moon… he actually started crying. He was wiping little tears from his eyes. It’s a day that our family will never forget for the rest of our lives.”
Gritty looks like he had just as much fun as Jack did at his party! The kindness and generosity of the Flyers franchise is what makes them so beloved by Philly natives and people all over.
